Larian Studios Unveil a Fresh Divinity, Declaring it Their Largest RPG Ever

The buzz around The Game Awards reached a fever pitch, particularly after presenter Geoff Keighley shared a puzzling image of a desert monolith. The mystery is finally answered. Larian Studios is developing a fresh Divinity game.

Revealed to be Divinity, the game was presented with a daring trailer that included memorable imagery, from a burning man to scenes of revelry and the literal unleashing of hell.

Not the Expected Sequel

For those anticipating Divinity Original Sin 3, this is not that. The studio clarified that a third Original Sin game to its venerated RPGs is not being worked on now.

Nevertheless, the developer referred to this new Divinity as a evolution of the core franchise. This choice of words hints that the team is likely crafting a real-time experience instead of another tactical title. Currently, we can only guess, as only a teaser video is available.

A Pillar of Modern RPGs

The Divinity series is highly rated and arguably it kicked off the recent resurgence of crunchy computer role-playing games. These games are celebrated for rich lore, choice-driven narratives, and complex character building—traits that later found massive success in games like Baldur's Gate 3.

While its setting is traditional swords and sorcery, what truly sets Divinity apart is the remarkable agency granted to the player.

Where many modern RPGs have simplified options, Divinity is packed with unique possibilities only possible by choosing a distinct build with a unique decision path.

The series is also wonderfully open-ended, enabling players to find creative solutions both in story and combat. Most missions can be approached in multiple ways, frequently in lateral fashion.

  • You might find an answer because you recalled something a dog told you.
  • Or, you could overcome an obstacle by moving environmental hazards in a clever way.

A New Chapter Begins

It is these creative systems that allow people to declare games like Divinity Original Sin 2 as one of the best role-playing games of all time. Now, the RPG community can look forward to more where that came from in this esteemed franchise.
