Manchester United Poised to Secure German Striker Lea Schüller from Bayern Munich

Manchester United are finalising completing the signing for prolific Germany striker Lea Schüller in a permanent move away from the Frauen-Bundesliga champions.

A Marquee Signing for the WSL Side

The forward, with half a year left on her deal, is known as a prolific goalscorer for her club and the national team. She has netted over 100 goals for Bayern and scored 54 times in 82 appearances for her country. This signing will be seen as a marquee signing for the WSL team.

Her exit from Bayern was expected after she was seen holding back emotions while applauding the German club’s fans after a win over Bayer Leverkusen recently.

It was reported in late December that the German women's top flight was losing one of its leading forwards. Per reports, the formalities for the transfer are now finalised.

Consistent Goal Threat to Strengthen the Forward Line

The 28-year-old’s signing is expected to provide a significant uplift to United’s forward line. She has been highly consistent in front of goal in Germany’s top flight.

  • For seven consecutive seasons, including the last term, she achieved at least a double-digit tally of league goals.
  • She won the Golden Boot in 2021-22 season with 16 goals.

Gathering Steam at Old Trafford

The acquisition of the German international coincides with a period when the club seem to be gathering positive momentum.

Their recent performances feature securing a place in the Champions League knockout phase playoffs as a seeded team and a victory in the Conti Cup quarter-finals.

In the transfer market, the mid-season window has brought additional activity:

  1. The signing of Sweden defender Hanna Lundkvist on a three-and-a-half-year deal.
  2. The contract extension for Japanese playmaker Hinata Miyazawa, who has become popular figure since arriving in 2023.

Regarding the midfielder's new deal, a club official stated: “Miyazawa is now a vital component to the way we play. Her footballing intelligence and skill enables her and the team to dominate play from the middle of the park.”

The new defender, having arrived from a side from the NWSL, added: “You can feel how much they [United] have grown in the last few years, competing in one of the strongest leagues in the world and performing in the Champions League.”
