Space Traveler Discloses Depression After Wave of Backlash Post-Spaceflight

A Vietnamese-American astronaut has spoken candidly about her struggle with mental health after enduring a relentless barrage of criticism in the aftermath of a pioneering women-only spaceflight.

The 34-year-old activist – celebrated as a researcher and activist – was part of the brief journey to space earlier this year, which also carried high-profile passengers.

The mission was heavily criticized by some, who challenged its value and environmental footprint.

Reflecting on the ordeal, Ms. Nguyen, who became the pioneer for her community, stated the negative reaction eclipsed her moment under an torrent of sexist abuse.

“I explained the depression could persist for a long time,” she recounted in a social media post, referring to a phone call from a fellow crew member in the days following the landing.

She portrayed the subsequent media coverage and social media frenzy as an “onslaught no human brain has evolved to endure”.

“I did not leave Texas for a week, unable to get out of bed,” she wrote. “A month later… I had to hang up… because I could not speak through my tears.”

Eclipsed by Backlash

The researcher, who has conducted studies in women's health research and conducted tests during the mission, said all her lifelong efforts – from her lab work and astronaut training to the historic significance of her roots – was buried under the tide of sexist vitriol.

She is most acclaimed for her groundbreaking advocacy protecting the rights of sexual assault survivors.

Her own goal of reaching space was paused after surviving a rape during her university years, leading to a years-long quest for justice.

Finding Solid Ground

Now, eight months after achieving her goal, she has stated the deepest pain is gradually receding, and she acknowledged the well-wishers whose support were her lifeline. “Your support rescued me,” she affirmed.

She added that despite the negativity, significant positive outcomes had come out of the mission, including spotlight on her women's health research and new advocacy opportunities.

Flight Details

The self-operating spacecraft departed Texas in the spring, carrying the historic roster on a short trip that passed the edge of space.

The team of pioneers also included leaders in different industries.

The enterprise behind the flight is a commercial aerospace company launched by a prominent billionaire entrepreneur.
