Super Typhoon Fung-wong Strikes the Philippines: Two Fatalities and Massive Evacuations Confirmed

The island nation has been hit hard by Intense Cyclone Fung-wong, which left a minimum of two fatalities and forced the evacuation of more than 1.4 million individuals.

Officials reported that the powerful weather system triggered widespread sudden floods, coastal inundation, landslides, and fierce high-velocity gusts, leading to the relocation of 1.4 million people across the country.

Widespread Destruction and Emergency Operations

In Pandan, Catanduanes, a severely affected area, emergency crews recorded rising waters reaching the tops of houses and homes washed out by the powerful currents.

Our team rescued 14 individuals stranded atop a house surrounded by water in a flood-prone area,” an emergency official explained. One resident frantically contacted us, reporting his home’s roof was at risk of tearing away by the wind. We saved him along with four family members.”

By Monday, officials confirmed at least two deaths: one from drowning on the island and a second individual who died after her home gave way in eastern Samar.

Typhoon Strength and Projected Path

The intense storm weakened to a typhoon on Monday morning while moving over the main island, where the capital is located.

Per the state weather service, the storm’s sustained wind speed decreased from 115 mph to 102 mph, but gusts peaked at over 170 mph.

The cyclone is projected to lose strength as it moves north toward Taiwan.

Response and Recovery

The national disaster response service stated efforts were ongoing to assess damage to infrastructure and homes.

Approximately 6,000 evacuation centres have been opened to accommodate tens of thousands of households.

Recent Context and Climate Impact

Fung-wong struck shortly following Typhoon Kalmaegi, which killed hundreds of lives and left another 135 missing before moving on to Vietnam, causing five deaths there.

Search operations for the missing persons were halted on Sunday due to safety concerns for rescue workers.

The climate crisis is making tropical storms stronger and common. Fung-wong is the twenty-first storm to impact the nation this year.

Researchers report that the frequency of intense cyclones striking the islands has risen doubled over the last two decades.

Global assessments suggest that severe weather events result in approximately millions in dollars in losses to the country annually.

The nation’s leader declared a state of emergency last week due to the extensive devastation from the prior typhoon and the expected damage from the new storm.
