The English and Wales Placed in the Same Group for 2027 Rugby World Cup in Australia

Rugby World Cup 2027 draw ceremony
The pool stage draw was overseen by rugby icons including former All Black Dan Carter.

The English side together with Wales find themselves placed in the same group for the 2027 Rugby World Cup, promising a major pool stage encounter in the tournament Down Under. Completing the group in Group F by the Tongan Ikale Tahi and Zimbabwe.

This pairing mirrors their memorable meeting in the group phase of the 2015 tournament, where a Welsh win at England's home ground contributed to the hosts' surprise early exit.

Key Group Pairings

Ireland alongside the Scots also share a group together, replicating the scenario from the 2023 edition. In that tournament, Ireland claimed a 36-14 win, with Scotland failing to progress to the quarter-finals.

Los Teros and Portugal, who each impressed as surprise packages in the last World Cup, complete that Pool D.

Notably, the winners of these two groups are kept apart from defending champions and world number one the Springboks before the showpiece match, assuming the Springboks top their assigned pool.

Tournament Ramifications

Should the pools play out in line with the current global standings, other leading contenders like New Zealand and France would remain separated from both England and the Irish until the championship decider.

Under those circumstances, Los Pumas would be the remaining top-ranked nation on that half of the knockout draw as those northern hemisphere teams.

Tournament Hosts Draw Blockbuster Fixture

Hosts the Wallabies find themselves together with their trans-Tasman rivals and three-time winners the All Blacks in Group A.

The Wallabies will open the tournament in Perth on 1 October 2027 in a blockbuster match designed to jump-start the competition.

Elsewhere, holders South Africa have drawn the Azzurri, Georgia and the Oaks. France are in a pool with the Brave Blossoms, 2031 hosts the United States and Manu Samoa.

Expanded Tournament for 2027

Argentina will face Fiji, Spain and Canada as the World Cup expands to twenty-four nations from the 20 who competed in France.

This edition will introduce a round of 16 stage for the very first time in the competition's existence.

While the victor of Pool F may be kept apart from some of the rugby's heavyweights early on, they will have to face the runner-up from Pool B – most likely the Italians – in the last 16.

A total of four of the remaining six pool winners will play a team that finished third from the initial group phase.
