The Mayor-Elect affirms plans to make his home in the storied Gracie Mansion
The city's next chief executive, Zohran Mamdani, has confirmed to live in the historic Gracie Mansion, leaving behind his rent-controlled apartment that was a central issue during his campaign.
An Iconic Home
Constructed in 1799, Gracie Mansion has served as the official residence for nearly all New York City mayors from the World War II era.
But, Mamdani, for whom rent control is a key policy, did not confirm this decision right away following his triumph in November.
"This decision rested on our family's safety and the need to directing my full attention on carrying out the platform on affordability New Yorkers elected me on," Mamdani said in a statement.
A Fond Farewell
His home was in Astoria, Queens, a district renowned for its vibrant immigrant communities and international dining.
"To Astoria: thank you for showing us what is great about New York City," he expressed.
"Although my address will change in Astoria, the community will continue to reside within me and my work," he said.
Political Debate
During his campaign, Mamdani connected his core platform – to freeze the rent – to his personal living arrangements.
However his rivals, most notably former New York Governor Andrew Cuomo, challenged Mamdani for remaining in the rent-stabilized unit although he is from a famous family.
A House Not Always Used
Not all mayors have opted to reside at Gracie Mansion.
Michael Bloomberg, the billionaire entrepreneur, kept his residence in his own townhouse on the Upper East Side during his three terms, which ended in 2012.
In his view, Bloomberg felt it could serve as a venue for official events, and pushed for a major refurbishment of the aging mansion.
A Vastly Different Setting
When Mamdani moves into Gracie Mansion near his inauguration on 1 January, he will find himself in a setting a stark contrast to his humble Astoria home.
Featuring butter yellow paint, emerald shutters, and white railings, Gracie Mansion is a wedding cake of a house situated by the East River.
Internally, the first floor of the Federal-style mansion is decorated consistent with the home's original era.
The estate, which allegedly has several bedrooms, also includes fortified protections to secure the mayor and his family.
Supernatural Speculation
Some residents have suggested that Gracie Mansion also has ghostly inhabitants.
Chirlane McCray, the partner of previous mayor Bill De Blasio, informed the press that doors occasionally opened and closing inexplicably, and the floors emitted odd sounds.
The departing mayor Eric Adams was even more convinced. "It doesn't matter what people claim," he stated in 2022. "The place is haunted in there, man."
A Critical Policy Issue
His former home is rent-stabilized, meaning the city sets limits on how much landlords can hike the monthly cost each year.
City residents see such units as crucial resources as the cost of housing rises faster than the means of many residents.
It was reported Mamdani paid about $2,300 each month for his apartment.
Per figures from the property website Zillow, the average rent for a studio or one-bedroom in New York City is $3,500 a month.
