On his first day in the mayor's office, Zohran Mamdani pledged to “transform” New York City, promising “a different age” and an ambitious beginning to his term.

An Unprecedented Mayor

The young political star, who was a relatively obscure state assemblyman, now stands as the city's first mayor of South Asian descent. He also made history by being the inaugural to be take the oath of office using the Islamic holy text.

“A moment like this is rare and rarer still is it that the citizens whose hold the controls for transformation,” Mamdani added.

Rejecting suggestions to lower expectations, the mayor declared: “I will do no such thing. The only expectation I seek to redefine is that of limited ambitions. Beginning today we will lead with courage and vision.”

Adhering to Democratic Socialist Ideals

Mamdani did not shy away from his political ideology. “I was elected as a democratic socialist and I will lead as one. I will not forsake my convictions for concern of being called extreme,” he proclaimed to an enthusiastic response.

The swearing-in was a two-part event, starting with a midnight oath-taking in a former subway station. He was formally sworn in on the front steps of city hall by political ally Bernie Sanders, who praised Mamdani's rise as a victory over the status quo.

A Sweeping Blueprint

Mamdani now begins one of the most challenging jobs in American politics, with a plan promising:

• Subsidized daycare
• Free buses
• A cap on rents for about 1 million households
• A trial program of municipally-operated grocery stores

The projected $10 billion expense of these initiatives may be challenging to fund. Mamdani has pledged to raise taxes on the city's top earners and big business. However, as a municipality subject to the state government, he will require the legislative support of Governor Kathy Hochul.

Navigating Political Dynamics

The new mayor will deal with skepticism from some members of the Jewish community concerned about his past comments regarding Israel. Tensions were revealed during the transition when a senior aide resigned over offensive past comments.

Mamdani has attempted to address these tensions by persuading Police Commissioner Jessica Tisch to stay on, avoiding the appearance of losing a Jewish police chief.

On the national stage, former President Donald Trump has called Mamdani a “socialist” and warned of withholding federal funding. Despite this, a recent meeting between the two was reportedly unexpectedly friendly.

The Basic Challenges of Leadership

Ultimately, New York mayors are evaluated by their ability in delivering essential functions: trash collection, reducing the rodent problem, fixing roadways, and ensuring smooth subway service.

Outgoing Mayor Eric Adams touted his team's public safety record, pointing to historically low numbers of murders and gun violence in 2025, with 301 homicides reported.

As his term begins, Mamdani and his wife will relocate from their Queens apartment to the stately Gracie Mansion. The outgoing mayor offered a quirky warning about a reputed resident spirit in the home, which allegedly only troubles those who fail to “do right by the city.”

Mamdani ended his remarks with a direct declaration: “The work has only just begun.”
