Alina Habba has stepped down as the chief federal prosecutor in the state. This comes after a judicial decision that questioned her right to hold the office.
Attorney General's Statement
US Attorney General, Pam Bondi, confirmed her stepping down on the start of the week. Bondi stated that the appeals court finding made it unworkable for the official to perform her duties.
"Do not interpret adherence to the ruling as defeat," Habba stated. "This battle will now reach across the country."

Her resignation comes a week after a US appeals court ruled that she had been acting without proper authority as the federal prosecutor. This judgment is expected to impact many prosecutions in the Garden State.
The judicial panel declared that a temporary posting that bypassed Senate approval breached the statute on vacant positions.

It was also stated that Habba will continue working within the justice department as a top consultant. She will seek further review of the court's action, in the hope of achieving a different outcome.
In a statement, she contended that the court "cannot be permitted to override the appointment of attorneys entrusted with performing the primary duty of the administration of criminal prosecution."
Performance in Office
Bondi highlighted Habba's record and pointed out that under her leadership, the Newark saw a significant drop in offenses. Additionally that the southern city of Camden experienced its initial homicide-free summer since 1974 with no murders.
Connection to Donald Trump
Habba, 41, was initially recruited to Trump's personal legal team in 2021. Subsequently, she defended the former president in his business records case in 2024, leading to his conviction on multiple felony counts of falsifying business records.
