UN:Me: A Cerebral Thriller Merging Survival Horror with Among Us Mechanics
The latest Day of the Devs online presentation unveiled a number of intriguing future games, but one especially has captured attention: UN:Me. Created by Historia and Shueisha Games, this solo adventure seems to fuse together the oppressive atmosphere of a Silent Hill title with the suspicion-driven heart of Among Us.
"This is a distinctive experience where a girl containing several human souls within her needs to flee from a maze of the psyche," explains developer Yasukazu Kawai.
Entering a Shattered Mind
In UN:Me, players assume the role of an unnamed heroine seeming to be of high school age. Within her exist four distinct personas, each with their own anxieties and motivations. These entities can seize control at will, releasing their deep-seated terrors upon her without warning.
Judging by showcased gameplay, much of the action unfolds within a eerie medical facility, while additional clips depict the main character navigating a desolate church.
A World of Individual Horror
"What are you fearful of? What causes you uneasy?" asks game director Shun Sasaki. "High places. Small rooms. Authority figures. Elements that seem trivial to other people can activate a deep instinct inside us. This game explores that concept — anxieties that are unique to every individual."
The central gameplay loop involves managing the persona that surfaces at any given time. However, these souls will change involuntarily as you play. During exploration, each soul's anxieties become exaggerated and attack the girl in succession. When the soul shifts, so does the particular terror the player experiences.
Eerie Aesthetics and a Deadly Decision
At first glance, UN:Me displays striking visual similarities with the Silent Hill series. The hospital is populated by orderlies all sporting the same face, with unnervingly wide smiles. Figures in the waiting room have large flowers where their necks should be. Flowers are a recurring element, juxtaposing natural beauty with unnatural horror.
Yet, UN:Me introduces a singular twist. Players must determine which of the four entities inhabiting the heroine is the "true" one. "Each of the personas asserts that the physical form belongs to them," explains a creator. "Throughout the game, you must determine who is authentic."
After a player have deduced a soul is an impostor, they are forced to destroy it. However, since each soul can lie or hide the reality, it is incredibly simple to choose incorrectly.
"Maybe you've already eliminated the real [soul] by your own actions," a voice suggests. "The last one standing might be a fake. Either way, your choices are irreversible."
UN:Me currently lacks a confirmed release date, but it is can be follow on digital storefronts.
