US Armed Forces Executes Deadly Strike in Pacific, Resulting in 4 Fatalities
As stated by a high-ranking defense spokesperson, the US armed forces carried out a lethal strike on a boat in the eastern Pacific, killing four individuals.
“A US joint task force carried out a deadly attack on a vessel linked to a terrorist group in open sea. Intelligence confirmed the vessel was transiting along a established drug smuggling route and was involved in narco-trafficking operations. A total of four male drug traffickers were killed, and no US military forces were harmed.”
Background and Recent Actions
This announcement comes a day after a declaration regarding a blockade of all targeted oil tankers to and from Venezuela. In that announcement on online platforms, the American leader alleged Venezuela of using oil profits to fund narcotics smuggling and other crimes, pledging to escalate the military buildup.
Just on Tuesday, US defense officials stated it had conducted strikes on three boats it accused of trafficking drugs in the Pacific, leading to the deaths of eight people. Since 2 September, over 20 strikes have resulted in the deaths of at least 99 people, the majority off the coast of Venezuela.
Administration Defends Actions Amidst Scrutiny
The government has faced increasing demands to release video of a 2 September vessel attack. But, the defense secretary have refused to do so. The administration has defended its campaign as a success, saying it has stopped drugs from reaching US shores and has pushed back on concerns that it is stretching the bounds of legal military action.
Although the administration has said the campaign is about stopping drugs destined for the US, comments from a senior aide appeared to confirm a wider political objective. In a recently published interview, the senior advisor said the president “wants to keep on blowing boats up until the Venezuelan president surrenders or concedes.”
This suggests the military campaign may be part of a push to remove Venezuela's sitting government.
